Noor: Festival of Lights, a two-day celebration of Diwali, returns to Souk Al Seef on Dubai Creek on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November. It is the festival's third edition, and entry is by registration on its website, which is open now.
The organisers promise processions, storytelling, dance and live music across the two days, and describe the festival as a home away from home for Dubai's many communities, open to people of every background. The line-up of performers has not been published yet: the festival's page says only that it is coming soon. Opening hours have not been announced either.
Noor is produced by Teamwork Arts, an Indian arts company that has been making cultural events for more than 35 years, in association with Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, the government body behind the city's shopping festivals and seasonal events. Teamwork Arts says it produces more than 30 festivals a year in 42 cities and 19 countries, the best known being the Jaipur Literature Festival, which also travels abroad.
Diwali itself falls on Sunday 8 November this year, so Noor's second day is the festival day. It is one of several celebrations across the city. Dubai's own citywide Diwali programme runs from 2 to 12 November, with most of its activities free, and Global Village marks the festival from 6 to 10 November, with a show of 600 drones over the park at 8pm on 8 November.
If you want to go, register on the Noor: Festival of Lights website before the weekend; Gulf News lists the registration as free. Souk Al Seef is on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek, between Al Ghubaiba and the Dubai Museum area, and Al Ghubaiba is the nearest metro station on the Green Line. Parking around the souk fills quickly on festival nights, so the metro or an abra across the Creek from Deira is the easier way in. Times and performers should be on the festival's page and its Instagram account, noorfestivaloflights, closer to the date.
