Dubai Municipality has set out what it wants the city to look like by 2033. Its Director General, Marwan bin Ghalita, presented the targets at a session called "Dubai Municipality and Life in Dubai 2033" at the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum on Tuesday, Gulf News reported.

The headline goals: 40% of new buildings in Dubai using fully smart construction methods such as 3D printing, robotic and modular building by 2033, and all of the city's waste kept out of landfill by the same year, with daily waste per person brought down to about 1.85kg. The Dh30 billion Tasreef rainwater drainage project, due to be finished in 2033, is meant to raise drainage capacity by 700% to more than 20 million cubic metres a day.

Looking further ahead, green and landscaped areas are to grow to 187 square kilometres by 2040, with about 3.5 million trees planted and 11 square metres of green space per person. The municipality is also adding artificial intelligence to its Montaji and DM Check apps, which residents use to check food products and inspection results.

For residents, the drainage project is the part that matters most in the rainy months: it is aimed at the flooded roads and underpasses seen after heavy storms. No new fees or rules were announced, and the municipality has not given dates for individual phases or areas.
