RTA is studying an underground transport network for DubaiDubai

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority is studying an underground transport network that would carry passengers, goods and services, its Director General and Chairman, Mattar Al Tayer, said on Tuesday. He described it as a new area of work for the authority, at a session called "The Future of Dubai Mobility in Three Dimensions" at the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum, Gulf News reported.

Al Tayer set out mobility on three levels. On the ground, Dubai aims for one in four journeys to be autonomous by 2030, and he said autonomous taxis covered more than four million kilometres in one year. In the air, the city's first air taxi station and an urban test flight are scheduled for 2026. Underground, an RTA team is now examining a full system for people and goods.

No route, cost, capacity or timetable was given for the underground network, and it is at the study stage. Nothing changes for metro, bus or taxi users for now; the RTA app and website remain the place to watch for any announcement.
