Dubai Police have started a road safety campaign aimed at pedestrians. It is run by the General Department of Police Stations with the General Department of Traffic, and officers from police stations across the city are out on field visits explaining how to cross safely.

The fine for crossing at a place that is not a designated crossing, or for ignoring traffic signals, is Dh400 under Article 89 of the Federal Traffic Law. Brigadier Majid Sultan Al Suwaidi, director of the General Department of Police Stations, said: "Road safety is a shared responsibility." Drivers are also being asked to slow down and give way at crossings, especially in busy, crowded areas.

If you walk to work or to the Metro, use zebra crossings, footbridges and signal crossings even when the road looks empty, and wait for the green man. Drivers should expect more officers around crossings in dense neighbourhoods while the campaign runs; no end date has been announced.
