An eye test, a few minutes on the RTA app or website, and the fees: the steps, costs and validity periods as the RTA lists them.

How to renew your driving licence in DubaiDubai

Renewing a Dubai driving licence is mostly done online and is issued instantly on most channels. You can renew up to six months before expiry if you are 21 or older, or three months before if you are younger. Here are the steps as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) sets them out.

1. Eye test: take an eye test at an approved eye test centre. It costs between Dh140 and Dh180 and stays valid for three years. Professional drivers also need a medical fitness test at an RTA-accredited hospital.

2. Clear your fines: all traffic fines on the licence must be paid before renewal.

3. Log in: open the RTA Dubai app or rta.ae and sign in with UAE Pass, your Emirates ID or passport, then enter the code sent to your phone. Dubai Now and the Mahboub chat assistant work too.

4. Choose renewal: pick renewal from the driver licensing services and confirm your licence details.

5. Pick delivery: a digital licence in the RTA Dubai app, collection from a self-service machine, or courier (Dh20 standard, Dh35 same day, Dh50 within two hours).

6. Pay: the licence fee is Dh300 if you are 21 or older and Dh100 if you are younger, plus a Dh20 knowledge and innovation fee. A late renewal costs Dh10 for every month since expiry, up to Dh500.

7. Validity: a renewed licence lasts five years for residents aged 21 and over, ten years for UAE and GCC citizens aged 21 and over, and one year for anyone under 21.

If your licence expired more than ten years ago, you must pass an evaluation test at a driving institute first (Dh200, plus file and application fees). People of Determination with a Sanad card get 50 percent off RTA services. Checked on 10 October 2026 on rta.ae.
