Construction has begun on two pedestrian bridges on Palm Jumeirah, a joint project of Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Holding Community Management, the company that runs the island's communities. The aim is to let people cross the busy trunk road on foot safely, and to keep traffic moving without stopping for crossings at street level.

The first bridge goes up near Shoreline, at the entrance to the Palm, and is scheduled to be finished in June 2027. The second is at Golden Mile, next to the shops along the trunk, and is due in October 2027. Together the two bridges will carry up to 2,700 people an hour, which the RTA says is more than today's demand and leaves room for growth. About 16,000 residents are expected to benefit.

Hussain Al Banna, chief executive of the RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency, said the project was part of the authority's partnership with Dubai Holding to tie road projects in with big developments, improving connections between areas and making them safer and easier to reach. Francis Gianni, chief executive of Dubai Holding Community Management, said the bridges would make it safer to walk around the Palm and smoother to drive.

The bridges are part of a wider push for walkers in Dubai. In June the RTA approved a five-year plan to build 31 pedestrian bridges and tunnels across key parts of the city by 2030.

For now nothing changes for people who live on or visit the Palm: the existing crossings stay in use while the bridges are built. Expect some roadworks near Shoreline and Golden Mile over the coming months, and allow a little more time on the trunk at busy hours. The RTA has not yet published any lane closures or diversions for the works.
