The UAE and Saudi Arabia have signed a preliminary agreement in Riyadh covering rail links and electricity, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported. It was signed by Mohamed Alsuwaidi, the UAE Minister of Investment, and Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the Saudi Minister of Energy.

On rail, the two sides set a framework for cross-border links focused on moving goods and cargo, and will carry out technical and economic studies on whether their networks can be connected.

On energy, the agreement covers connecting the two electricity grids and the exchange and sale of power, again starting with feasibility studies. Both countries will coordinate with other GCC states on expanding the wider Gulf grid.

No timeline or investment figure was announced.
