A pair of 16.5kg gold earrings sets two world records in Dubai Gold District
Joyalukkas has unveiled Mayura Sahasra, a pair of 22-carat gold earrings named by Guinness World Records as the heaviest and the largest ever made. They are on show for free at its Jewel of Joy showroom.
Joyalukkas unveiled a pair of 22-carat gold earrings on Saturday 24 October that Guinness World Records has certified as both the heaviest and the largest pair ever made. Called Mayura Sahasra, "a thousand peacocks", they are jhumka-style bell earrings with a combined net gold weight of 16.514kg, more than five times the previous record.
Each earring is 1.215 metres long and 0.682 metres across. Gulf News reported that 55 craftsmen spent 5,840 hours on them over several months. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, unveiled them, and a Guinness adjudicator presented the two certificates at the event.
The earrings stay on permanent display at Jewel of Joy, the 25,000 sq ft Joyalukkas showroom that opened in Dubai Gold District this month.
Anyone can go and see them: entry is free and the showroom is open from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week. Dubai Gold District is in Deira, next to the old Gold Souk.
