Salah Elmur exhibition opens at Jameel Arts Centre on 31 October
"Just as the Heart of a Mango is a Stone" brings the Cairo-based painter's work since 2018 to the Jaddaf Waterfront gallery until 14 March 2027. Entry is free.
Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai opens a solo exhibition by the painter Salah Elmur on Saturday 31 October. Titled "Just as the Heart of a Mango is a Stone", it runs until 14 March 2027 and is curated by Zain Al Saie and Qutouf Elobaid.
Elmur was born in 1966 and grew up in Khartoum, near the Blue Nile; he now lives and works in Cairo. The show gathers paintings made after 2018 alongside archival photographs, sketches and ephemera, including works that reuse pictures from his family's Studio Kamal in Khartoum. It is arranged in three chapters, To Appear Otherwise, Salt of the Earth and Mourning Song, and deals with memory, landscape, family, land and labour, and grief.
The centre is holding an opening talk with the exhibition on 31 October, and the show sits alongside the Artists' Rooms by Walid Siti, Shezad Dawood and Lulua Alyahya, which run until 31 January.
Jameel Arts Centre is free to enter; visitors check in at the welcome desk on arrival. It is open from 10am to 8pm, and from noon on Fridays, and is closed on Tuesdays. It sits on Jaddaf Waterfront on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek, about a 12-minute walk from Al Jaddaf metro station on the Green Line. Event details and any sign-up for the talk are on jameelartscentre.org.
